BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- First, State Sen. Dean Florez opposed the use of a new chemical at Big West Refinery. Now he's calling on the attorney general to look into an ammonia leak that happened at the plant over the weekend.Over the weekend, Big West Refinery reported on Sunday what they said was a small amount of ammonia leaking. The refinery said the leak was quickly contained, but Wednesday morning Florez said the refinery didn't report the incident to the authorities in a timely manner.
Florez cited the incident as "further evidence of lax safety standards" in a press conference Wednesday at Meadows Field Airport. After this incident, Florez said he fears letting the company use hydrofluoric acid, the chemical Big West Refinery would use in its expansion.Florez is calling on Attorney General Jerry Brown to investigate the leak.In the past, Big West Refinery has pointed to its safety record when defending its use of the hydrofluoric acid.ABC23 will have their response to Florez' latest comments as soon as they become available.
