The condition of a Kern County Sheriff's deputy injured in a crash with another deputy over the weekend has been changed from serious to good Tuesday afternoon, according to a Kern Medical Center spokesperson.

Doug Swanson, 30, underwent surgery on his elbow Tuesday, according to his mother, Margaret Soliz. He is also being treated for a broken ankle, broken pelvis, and a fractured vertebra. He is also suffering from a bruised lung and a concussion.

Swanson was injured Friday night when his patrol car collided with Deputy James Throne's patrol car near Lamont. Throne, 29, was killed in the crash. Authorities said the two deputies were responding to a foot chase outside of Lamont when their cars collided.

Local law enforcement has set up bank accounts for both deputies and their families. Anyone can donate at Mission Bank in Bakersfield or Lamont to the family of Deputy James Throne or Deputy Doug Swanson.

The money will go to pay for funeral expenses and support for their families.
