Bakersfield Country Music Awards Held

Dozens Honored At Local Awards Show Held At Popular Country Bar

POSTED: 9:27 am PDT June 9, 2008

A group of musicians and fans dedicated to the Bakersfield Sound gathered in Oildale over the weekend to honor people who've kept the music genre alive.

The Second Annual Bakersfield Country Music Awards descended on Trout's Bar to pay tribute to the original country sound that put Bakersfield on the map in the 1950s and 1960s.

It was a chance to recognize artists, past and present, who've dedicated themselves to preserving a type of country music originating in the Bakersfield area.

Honoree Jimmy Sanders said, “My father was Jelly Sanders who was on the Cousin Herb Show. He was the first band here at Trouts -- first band to play here when Trouts was a really small place.”

“My dad played guitar, and sang, and he got me into it and I liked to listen to him. So I just took up where he left off,” said Honoree David Lasswell.

Monty Byrom of the band Bighouse, and a regular performer at the Buck Owens Crystal Palace, said the Bakersfield country music scene has roots all over the world.

There were about 50 people honored at Sunday's celebration.
