The Kern County Board of Supervisors meeting became a venting session. Dozens on both side of the issue got up to speak about Barnett's decision to stop performing all civil weddings as of June 13.Barnett released a statement last week saying that the department will no longer perform civil ceremonies, citing budget problems. Her statement caused controversy in light of the California's Supreme Court's decision to allow same-sex couples to marry as of next week.At least one local gay group didn't speak out in opposition to Barnett. "We as a group are not against Ann Barnett," said Whitney Weddell, the chair of a local gay and lesbian rights group. She said other individuals and groups are calling for Barnett's ouster. When asked if she knew of a possible recall or impending protest, Weddell said she hadn't heard anything.Conservative residents have rallied in support of Barnett's decission. The group Campaign for Children and Families requested that Supervisors pass an ordinance that would stop the county from issuing licenses to gay couples. No decision was made at the meeting. As the law stands now, on June 17 same-sex couples can apply for a marriage license.Follow the ABC23 Newsroom at twitter.com/nlbelardes Or read another ABC23 article: New Harry Potter-esque Novel Written By Animorphs Creator.
