Piute Fire Jumps Containment Lines

Southern California Fire Crews Join Battle Against Wildfire

UPDATED: 7:20 pm PDT July 8, 2008

Bad conditions continued through Tuesday as the Piute fire burned through a previous backfire area in the persistent 11-day-old blaze in the mountains of Central California.

Officials blamed shifting high winds, triple digit temperatures and humidity for fanning the flames of the wildfire.

The Piute fire jumped containment lines Monday night causing new recommended evacuations for people living in the mountains near Bodfish. Those recommendations continued through Tuesday evening.

"The fire's been ripping so bad they've been taking people off the front lines because it's kind of been unsafe," said one helitack crew firefighter helping load copters with fuel barrels for dozers.

Containment of the wildfire continued at 22 percent due to high winds. There's no indication Tuesday evening on what those containment numbers might be as they were last updated Monday.

Fire crews throughout the 11-day blaze have used bulldozers and hand crews. On Monday and Tuesdsay, hand crews were pulled off the front lines due to heavy smoke and the extreme behavior of the fire.

The wildfire, fought on rugged mountain terrain, also jumped containment lines on the western front of the fire. So far the fire has burned 30,747 acres.

New recommended evacuation orders have been issued for people living along Caliente-Bodfish road and people living between the intersection of Saddle Springs Road at Hooper Hill and south to the Piute Meadows Trading Post.

Precautionary evacuations are still in effect for Cortez Canyon, Upper Kelso Valley, Liebel Ranch, Valley View Subdivision and Rocky Point. The evacuation center at the Lake Isabella Senior Citizen Center has also reopened.

MEETING: There will be another public information meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Senior Center in Lake Isabella.

Dozens of people living in communities affected by the Piute fire met Monday night to get an update on the fire. People learned more about the firefighting effort that's keeping flames away from their homes.

After Monday's evacuation notice, 16 additional strike teams, or about 80 fire trucks from across Southern California were called in to help battle the blaze. Some of those engines arrived on the fire lines Monday night.

The Piute fire has cost $10 million to fight since it began on June 28. Officials said the blaze is still at least two weeks away from full containment.

The Kern County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution declaring the Piute fire a local fire disaster and state of emergency. The resolution was introduced during their Tuesday morning session.

Along with thousands of acres of land ruined by the fire, it's also creating unhealthy air quality for the Kern River Valley and Central Valley.
