BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- While flames from the Piute Fire are nowhere near Bakersfield, smoke has created some dangerous health conditions in the Central Valley.

The Valley Pollution Air Control District has issued a smoke caution for the Central Valley.

Exposure to tiny particle pollution in the air can cause serious health problems. People are being urged to avoid outside activities, especially in the middle of the day.

That's when heat intensifies the effect of those microscopic particles.

Dr. Claudia Jonah of the Department of Public Health said antihistamines and nasal sprays help to remove the particles.

She said if symptoms continue people should contact their doctor.
