BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A man from Shafter has died following a head-on wreck near Buttonwillow on Tuesday.Investigators said the wreck occurred just after 3:30 p.m. on Highway 58 near Elk Grove Drive, ABC23 reported. The California Highway Patrol said 30-year-old Dustin Garcia was driving a green Chevy Camaro eastbound while a tractor-trailer was headed westbound. Authorities said one of the vehicles veered into the center of the road causing the wreck, but they aren't sure which one.
Authorities said the tractor-trailer exploded into flames upon impact and went off the highway, taking out several power lines. The truck eventually stopped in the front yard of a nearby home.County fire crews were called in to put out the fire, and witnesses tried to help both victims until emergency crews arrived, police said.Witnesses told ABC23 that Garcia was pinned in the vehicle and was bleeding from his nose and mouth. He was airlifted to Kern Medical Center with major injuries, while the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken by ambulance to the hospital with moderate injuries.Garcia was pronounced dead an hour later. The Buttonwillow CHP office is still investigating the wreck. Authorities said neither alcohol nor speed played a factor in the crash.
