Federal Government Honors the Late Buck Owens

Oildale is going postal for Buck Owens.

Tuesday was his birthday and the celebration was on, as the tiny post office in Oildale where Buck mailed autographed photos to fans in the early days was renamed in his honor.

Buck Owens will long be remembered for his contributions to country music and family and friends celebrated what would have been his 79th birthday Tuesday night with a concert at the Crystal Palace starting at 6:30pm and featuring Martina McBride, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, Buddy Alan Owens, the Buckaroos and Monty Byrom.

Buck left his mark on Bakersfield and Oildale and now there is a stamp that honors Buck, as well as a post office.

"Dad would have been ecstatic that they put his name on something as significant as a post office," said his son, Buddy Alan Owens.

The Bakersfield Sound has a new spot in which it can be remembered.

The Owens family donated one of Bucks trademark red, white and blue guitars to be displayed inside the post office next to his picture.

The post office has issued a special pictorial postmark to commemorate the event.

Ray Brondel was the first to buy the plaque displaying the stamps honoring the dedication.

"I got married on his birthday," Brondel said. "He means quite a bit to old country. It just doesn't seem right with all the old boys gone."

Congressman Kevin McCarthy was the brain child behind the legislation that changed the name of the post office from Minner Station to the Buck Owens Station.

"What Buck had done, he was much more than a country music singer," McCarthy said. "He did so much for this community. He chose to live here, he didn't live some where else. The quality of life. He helped out financially and nobody knows it."

Buck first came through the San Joaquin Valley in the 1940's as a truck driver. Bakersfield caught is eye and he moved here in the 1950's. His family says Bakersfield will always be home.

Buck was born August 12, 1929 in Sherman, Texas and that town is planning to celebrate this occasion on August 14th.

Buck died march 25, 2006 at his Bakersfield home he would have been 79-years-old.
