State public health officials have recalled a type of Pedigree pet food because of possible salmonella contamination.

The California Department of Public Health issued a statement Tuesday pulling certain bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites.

Mars Petcare US of Franklin, Tenn., which makes the pet food, said that a component that should have held back because of positive test results was accidentally shipped to a Pedigree facility in Tracy.

The component was used in about 100 bags of the food, which were shipped to Albertsons supermarkets in Southern California and to limited Costco stores in Northern California and Nevada.

Recalled product information is as follows:

Product: PEDIGREE® Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites
Size: 52-pound bags
UPC Code: 23100 05110
Lot Codes: 831BFCAT02 and 830DFCAT02
Best Buy Date: 07/2009
Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag

Consumers are advised to call 877-568-4463 for more information.

There have been no reports of illnesses resulting from the recalled pet food.

In an effort to prevent the transmission of salmonella from pets to family members and caregivers, the FDA recommends that everyone follow appropriate pet food handling guidelines when feeding their pets. A list of safe pet food handling tips can be found here.
