DELANO, Calif. -- A claim has been field against the Delano Union Elementary School District by the former superintendent who said he was wrongfully terminated. The case stems from a grand jury report released in June. The grand jury accused the district’s board members of lying and abusing their power. Ronald Garcia was the superintendent in Delano for seven years and cooperated with their investigation. On Monday, he said the board retaliated against him for participating and terminated him from his position in September.Garcia said he and the board were supposed to come up with a termination agreement, but that agreement has yet to come. He has now filed a claim against the district for wrongful termination, defamation of character and discrimination.
The district's attorneys released a statement saying that they “regret the need to consider these claims…and reassures the community that their focus is on serving the students.”Garcia said if they can’t come to a settlement soon, he is prepared go forward with a lawsuit. Garcia said this case may make it difficult for him to pursue a career somewhere else, but said that right now he is concentrating on ending this case. The Delano Union Elementary School District is now under the supervision of interim superintendent Robert Aguilar. There is no word yet from the district about who will officially replace Garcia.
