Election 2008: Local Parties To Party After Getting Out Vote

High Voter Turnout Expected

With six days to go before the election, the campaigns and candidates are in an all-out effort to get out the vote.

Local parties are no different.

Both the Kern County Republican and Democratic parties are prepared to walk precincts, manage phone banks and drive voters to the polls.

It's a process that began weeks ago with voter registration drives, appearances at the Kern County Fair and the selling of campaign paraphernalia.

"Everyone is working, everyone is excited about this election," said Bernita Jenkins, a member of the Kern County Democratic Party.

The Democrats plan to celebrate election night at the Doubletree Hotel in Northwest Bakersfield, after a busy last few days of getting voters ready to vote.

"We're gonna have poll watchers, poll markers, we're going to have sign holders, we're going to have drivers, we're going to have people handing out refreshments, it's going to be a fun day," Jenkins said.

"We'll actually be doing everything, with precinct walking," said Dennis Beebe, chair of the Kern County Republican Party. "We'll be reminding people to vote, there's been a huge registration drive among all the Republican volunteers and now it's a matter of reminding them, that hey, it's Tuesday -- we need you."

Driving their supporters to the poll is something parties do every four years, literally and figuratively, but this year is a bit different.

"I definitely think there's an increase over the last election," Beebe said. "There's definitely more people who are excited, and interested, in making sure that their vote is heard."

"But no matter who you vote for, go out and vote," said Jenkins.
