BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Voter registration fraud allegations have popped up all over the country as we get closer to Election Day.California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres was at Kern County Democratic Headquarters on Thursday afternoon to not only talk about how voters can protect their vote, but to also address recent allegations of voter registration fraud in the Los Angeles area and right here in Kern County."We also know that this kind of activity has occurred in Los Angles County, Kern County, Fresno County, Ventura County, San Bernardino County," Torres said.
Torres discussed the recent allegations against Young Political Majors or YPM, a company contracted by the state Republican Party to register voters.YPM's founder, Mark Jacoby was charged and eventually arrested on two charges each of voter registration fraud and perjury in Los Angeles County.YPM's alleged fraud, which is still under investigation by the Secretary of State's office occurred mostly in the Los Angeles area and in Kern County.Last week Elections Chief Sandy Brockman told ABC 23 that YPM was in the county at some point this year getting voters to sign a petition to help lower gas prices, when in actuality those voters party affiliations were being changed unknowingly.Torres says his party is gathering voter complaints and assessing the information before handing it over to the District Attorney's office, saying the Democratic party doesn't like to "make allegations without appropriate evidence."The Californian Republican Party has called Jacoby's charges "politically motivated" and that democratic and voter accusations are not supported by the charges. As for Tuesday's vote, Torres wants voters to know their rights.Torres says Kern County residents who either had their party affiliation changed or can't vote at a polling place should call the Democratic Headquarters on Brundage Lane. Here are other ways to protect yourself on Election Day.The Secretary of State offers a Voter Hotline at: (800) 345-VOTE (8683)The Kern County Elections Department has staff ready to answer your questions from now through Nov. 4th at: (661) 868-3590The Secretary of States website is: www.sos.ca.gov/elections/
