BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The California State University system may have to turn away some eligible students from all of its 23 campuses due to state budget cuts.CSU Chancellor Charles Reed proposed the enrollment restrictions after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced $66 million in midyear funding cuts to the CSU system. If approved, this would be the first time in history such a restriction would affect all 23 campuses in the system.California State University Bakersfield officials said that despite the proposal, students have no need to worry as long as they enroll on time.
"We want students to apply early. Our community is a lot of first-generation college students, so we don't want to give the message they can't apply. So the key is apply now and they won't have to worry about anything after March 1st," said Steven Watkin, director of University Outreach Services at CSUB.Students already attending CSUB said they feel confident of new students enrolling because unlike other Cal States, the Bakersfield campus is not as crowded."There will be less students and possibly more room in classes, but I don't think there are too many students here now," said Brandalyn Thomas, CSUB student."Cal State Bakersfield is kind of on the other side of the spectrum compared to other CS schools, just because a lot of the clubs and student body government are actually wanting more of a campus life. So we actually don't have a problem with that," said Jacob Barksdale, CSUB student. The university's governing board of trustees is scheduled to discuss the proposal in Long Beach on Wednesday. The board will also be asked to consider increasing tuition for business school graduate students.
