No Thanksgiving Dinner For Fido

With Thanksgiving only two days away, you're probably already preparing your holiday dinner, but ABC 23’s Crystal Figueroa found out that those treats may do more harm than good if your feeding them to your pets.

Tuesday, animal experts at the Delano Animal Shelter said a slice of ham or a piece of chocolate may send “Fido” to the vet. One animal control officer said although professional opinions may vary, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanksgiving dinner is a meal many people and pets eagerly anticipate, but if these dishes get in the wrong bellies, it could turn your dinner sour.

Animal control officer Frankie Vivas worked as a veterinary assistant for eight years. As an animal control officer for the Delano shelter, he advised that there are plenty of dangers lurking in this dinner.

"Working at a vet, we'd see a lot of pancreatitis, vomiting, diarrhea...dogs being lethargic," said Vivas.

He said those foods are high in fiber, protein, cholesterol and fat. He said these foods can be twice as dangerous for puppies. He said their smaller organs would have to excrete more enzymes to break down the food, that’s why they are trying to educate the public about the dangers of feeding your pets holiday foods. Vivas said not to feed table scraps to your pets and to remember that they are not garbage disposals.

Vivas said if you want to avoid your pet any temptation, the best thing to do is stick to dog food and keep your pets in a separate room during dinner.
