BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Leonardo Da Vinci created some wonderful works of art in his time, but as of recently, the Da Vinci name is taking on a whole new meaning to the local medical front. The Da Vinci Surgical Robot is already tying up loose ends around the gynecology and urology departments at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. Dr. Robert Waguespack is one of three doctors at BMH that trained to use the robot that specializes in precision prostate and kidney operations.Waguespack said, “"We offer something in Kern County that has not been offered before this. What that offers for our patients and the community is the ability to stay in town and get the same level of care they might have to travel elsewhere for.”
Waguespack uses the Da Vinci robot with both his hands and feet. He uses his hands to control the arms of the robot and his feet to control the camera."I think all of us put us in a position of wanting to deliver quality care and recognizing that we are possible patients too. There is the same stress the same level of preparation mentally that comes into surgery. At the end of the day it is nice to look back and know how we have done things differently," Waguespack said.
