BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- You can buy postage stamps at the grocery store, by mail and online. But one place you won't be able to find them anymore is in a vending machine at your post office.Post office officials said the cash machines are being phased out because they were getting old and the parts were hard to come by.
"The technology is obsolete, they don't take debit or credit cards and we found that the utilization has dropped dramatically over the past several years because there is so many other options to get stamps," said Bakersfield Post Master Jim Brouillard. At the Camino Media post office in the southwest, the vending machines have been replaced with an automated one. The Automated Postal Center Machine sells stamps and you can use it to mail a package. It differs from the old machines by it only accepts debit and credit cards, no cash. And if you want to buy a single stamp, you're going to have to wait in line."My complaint, they took away the stamp machines. We can get them here. But that was easier, you don't have to wait in line. That's where you'd get a line here for stamps and stuff," said customer William Murray.Post office officials said the touch screen machines are easy to use and are available 24 hours a day."People seem to be afraid of them so we put clerks out to show people how to use the machine," said Brouillard. "And once they learned how to use the machine they love it. I does everything a window clerk will do for you except smile and thank you at the end of the transaction."As of right now the Stockdale and Camino Media post offices are the only ones with the machine. But officials said the Stockdale machine is out of order because it was vandalized and they hope to have it back in working order soon.
