A Kern County sheriff's deputy was shot in the face Saturday night in McFarland is now in fair condition. His suspected shooter is behind bars.

ABC23 has learned that the deputy is 25-year-old Thomas Moore. Sheriff’s officials said he is a two-year veteran of the department. They said he suffered injuries to his eye, arms, hands and neck but is expected to be released from the hospital this week.

Deputies said Moore had just exited his car when he was responding to a call in the area to reports of a shooting. Deputies said the suspect, 31-year old Juan Valdez Jr., had shot his wife in the chest. They said that’s when Moore responded to help, but Valdez came up to him and shot him in the face.

Moore returned fire, but Valdez was not hit.

Officials said both Moore and the female victim were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Officials said when additional deputies arrived to the scene, Valdez surrendered and was arrested.

Five children ranging from ages 6 to 13 were also inside the home at the time of the shooting, but they were not injured.

Neighbors said the family was quiet and kept to themselves.

Other neighbors said 11th Street is a dangerous place.

Valdez was booked into the Kern County Jail on attempted murder, mayhem, felony spousal abuse and felony child endangerment charges. His bail is set at $670,000. He is due in court on Tuesday.

Deputies said the female victim was treated and released from the hospital. They have not released her name since she is a victim of domestic violence.

ABC23 spoke with Valdez's mother, Carmela Valdez, who confirmed that her son had a history of substance abuse and depression, but she said she couldn't believe he could shoot anyone. She offered her apologies to Moore and his family.

ABC23 also spoke with the mother of Valdez's wife on Monday. She said despite the chaos that happened Saturday night, Valdez was a good husband and blamed his actions to the lasting effects of drugs.

ABC23 will continue to update you on Moore's condition.
