Woman Sexually Assaulted In Jr. High Parking Lot

POSTED: 3:57 pm PST January 29, 2009
UPDATED: 12:10 pm PST January 30, 2009

Fruitvale Junior High School is no longer on lockdown after a reported sexual assault and kidnapping in the area, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

A student was not involved in the incident but the school on Calloway Drive was placed on lockdown because the reported assault occurred in the area, according to police.

The victim, an adult female, reported that at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, she was confronted by a man in the parking lot of Babies 'R Us.

The man, armed with a firearm, told the woman to get into her vehicle which was occupied by her 18-month-old child.

The man then entered the victim’s vehicle and ordered her to drive to an area ATM where she was forced to withdraw money.

The man then made the woman drive to the parking lot of Fruitvale Jr. High School where he sexually assaulted her, the BPD reported.

Once the assault occurred, the man fled from the vehicle on foot.

The man is described as a black male 30 years old, stands 6 feet and weighs 200 pounds. He is said to be of a muscular build and was last seen wearing an army green hooded jacket. He was also armed with a firearm, the BPD reported.

Neither the woman or her child were injured.

Fruitvale Jr. High School was put on lockdown for approximately one hour while the immediate area and school grounds were searched with the use of Bakersfield Police canines and the Kern County Sheriff’s Department helicopter.

Once the school grounds were cleared, the school was released from lockdown.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Bakersfield Police at 661-327-7111.
