Police:Woman Embezzled More Than $324,000 From Employer

POSTED: 2:51 pm PST February 11, 2009
UPDATED: 10:54 am PST February 13, 2009

It was June 13th of last year when the Bear Valley Springs Association discovered irregular and unusual entries in their system reports.

June 13th was also the last day Kerry Lee Brandt showed up to work.

General Manager of the Bear Valley Springs Association, Michael Bennett said, "We had a Thursday staff meeting. Following the staff meeting, I was approached by accounting line level staff who actually worked for Ms. Brandt with some concerns and at that time, I am sure she knew her staff had come to me, and she didn’t show up to work the next day.”

An audit confirmed numerous forged and altered bank statements and also unauthorized transfers.

According to police, the investigation showed Brandt was the benefactor of over $324,000.

Bennett said, “She was certainly a very intelligent person, so I just wish she would have applied this energy and effort and intelligence into something that was constructive."

ABC23 has learned that before the police were involved friends questioned Brandt about how she could afford such a lavish lifestyle on her modest salary, Brandt said her Hollywood boyfriend actor Anthony Dennison of "The Closer," showered her with gifts.

ABC23 spoke with Dennison Thursday afternoon and he said he has never met Brandt.

When he was contacted by police, Dennison said, “When I got the information, I thought it was a practical joke. I thought someone was going to pop in with a video camera and say 'gotcha.'”

But it was no joke.

According to police it was all part of Brandt’s cover.

Sergeant David Watts of the Bear Valley Police Department said, "The evidence seems to show that she was trying to create an alibi long before she ever left town. Anticipating that, as is common sense, you can’t go on forever doing stuff like this. It’ll catch up to you.”

Brandt is described as a white woman with brown eyes and brown hair. She stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. She also has a nine year old daughter.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Bear Valley Police Department tip line at 661-821-1457.
