Man Falls 20 Feet At Power Plant

GRAPEVINE -- At approximately 11:50 a.m. Monday, a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department for an industrial injury which occurred at the Pastoria Power Plant at Grapevine, south of Bakersfield. Approximately 13 Kern County Firefighters were deployed to the scene.Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with a maintenance worker that had fallen approximately 20 ft from an internal walkway inside an air filtration unit, the KCFD reported.This very large unit filters air before it enters a gas powered turbine which generates electricity.
The worker was part of a maintenance crew who were in the process of changing the filters when the accident happened. A fire crew made contact with the man who was stabilized before being secured to a backboard, the KCFD reported.A second fire crew utilized a ladder truck to gain access to the man from the outside who was still approximately 60 ft from ground level, the KCFD reported.The man was passed through an opening in the façade created by the fire crew and place onto the work platform (basket) of the truck. The man was brought to ground level with the use of the truck and subsequently transferred to a waiting Medi-Vac helicopter for transport to a local area hospital, the KCFD reported.There were no other reported injuries.
