Tehachapi Woman Houses Over 170 Dogs

POSTED: 5:32 pm PST February 27, 2009
UPDATED: 5:18 pm PDT June 23, 2009

Animal Control laws in Tehachapi allow Kimi Peck to have as many pets as she wants, but Code Compliance says her operation is not the issue, but instead it is the land use.

Code Compliance investigator Al Rojas said when he has visited Peck's residence the 170 some odd dogs appear to be well taken care of.

He said Peck even has people working on keeping the residence clean.

Rojas said that what Code Compliance found is that her home's primary use is no longer a residence but instead a shelter for dogs.

Code Compliance is presenting two petitions to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

One to declare the property a public nuisance and the other to impose administrative penalties.

A one time fee of $5,000 and $500 a day she is not in compliance.

In order to comply Peck would need to get a conditional use permit for her property.

On Friday, Peck said if her home is declared a public nussiance on Tuesday, on Wednesday her dogs will be euthanized.

"They will be humanely euthanized Wednesday morning, and I want the media there to watch. I want the media to show the citizens of Kern County and people of the United States of America what you can do to 200 innocent dogs," Peck said.

Peck said she is extremely upset because before she moved to Tehachapi she said she did her research to make sure her and her dogs could live there.

The Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Bakersfield.

Peck, as well as supporters and agitated neighbors, will be in attendance.
