BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- 85 teachers and staff in the Kern High School District are set to receive pink slips this week. The numbers break down to 53 teachers and six counselors, with the Bakersfield Adult School taking another big hit with 18 issued pink slips. Six more teachers from the Regional Occupational Center and Nueva Cal Safe program will also get notices. Now because 85 pink slips have been issued, that does not mean 85 people will lose their jobs.
The school district should know by March 30 how many teachers plan to retire or resign, and the budget will be reevaluated in May.If the district receives more money before the deadline, that will lower the number of teachers to be laid off.Bill Jones, Assist Superintendent Of Personnel said, "What happens with these probationary teachers is they have reemployment rights for 24 months. So before we look at or offer jobs to anyone else who would be brand new to the district, we go back to this group of teachers."The cuts will mostly affect first and second year teachers and the six counselors were chosen on seniority as well.
