BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Accused animal hoarder Cynthia Gudger was back in court Wednesday morning and has been found not competent to stand trial on felony animal cruelty charges.Gudger, also known as Anita Gilbert, had previously been found incompetent in her first psychological evaluation, but prosecutors and Gudger asked for a second opinion.Wednesday, the results of that second psychological evaluation showed again she is unfit to stand trial.
Gudger faces 10 counts of animal cruelty after she was found living with dozens of sick, dying and dead animals in her Tehachapi home.Wednesday, Judge Michael Bush ruled that Gudger should now go to Kern Mental Health for further evaluations, treatment and medications, but Gudger said she wanted to excuse her lawyer, yet again, and even made a request to recuse the judge.Michael Lukehart, Gudger's defense attorney, said, “We will get a recommendation as to the best mode of treatment for her and where to house her during that treatment. And then the judge will litigate that issue."Kern County Animal Control now has to preserve the evidence they have collected in her case until the time when she is found competent.Gudger is due back in court in a month to review her mental health.
