BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Summer is just around the corner and that means high temperatures and even higher risks of heat stroke. That's why the Agriculture industry and CAL-OSHA held a seminar on heat illness for business owners and growers.Provide proper water, shade, and heat training for your employees or face major consequences. That was the message today at the seminar.Last year Kern County had the highest number of work-related heat illness in the state according to CAL OSHA.
Three people died as a result of heat stroke while working out in the sun. CAL OSHA conducted more than 2000 inspections statewide at outdoor worksites in 2008. More than half of those resulted in violations."Unfortunately what we're finding is more than 30 percent of businesses with outdoor worksites are actually prepared for the heat" said Erika Monterroza of the California Department of Industrial Relations.CAL OSHA says if they inspect a worksite and find no shade, water or chairs to rest in on a hot day, there will be serious consequences. Those consequences include fines of up to $25,000.
