BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The future for Ricky's Retreat is not looking good.
Chris Pulsifer has been calling RR home for the past three months, but that may soon change as Bakersfield's only AIDS hospice home faces eviction due to foreclosure.Pulsifer said, "(I’m) very scared. I don't have any options other than the street, I want to be healthy and live a normal life."Pulsifer said RR is the closest thing to having a normal life for him. For the past six years, the hospice and transitional home has provided shelter, food, and support services for thousands of people with AIDS.Jacquie Sullivan, Bakersfield councilwoman, said, “Ricky's Retreat serves as a place where they can go, relax, be accepted and cared for."But this haven will disappear if RR doesn't raise $68,000 in the next two weeks.April 26 is the deadline for RR to raise $90,000 or be evicted.RR director Audrey Chavez said losing the hospice home would mean a huge step backward for Bakersfield.Chavez said, "Our people with AIDS have been discriminated against and they have had to go without hospice care. Too many people have had to die without that resource and so we can't go backwards as a county. We have to maintain, move forward but never backwards."RR will be hosting a few more fundraisers until its deadline. There will be a BBQ Saturday April 18 at RR and another fundraiser with food and entertainment at the Nile on Sunday April 19.And on April 23, R&B artists Evelyn Champagn King and Chris Tian will hold a benefit concert at the Nile.If RR can't raise the money in time, another option for them is to have someone else buy the home and lease it to them.

In the past month and a half, RR has raised $22,000, but it still has a long way to go in a very short amount of time and that has members of the hospice home terrified.Report a typo or inaccuracy
