A member of the sheriff department's Senior Citizen Unit has been injured in the hills near Caliente.

The California Highway Patrol said Manuel Terrazas, 73, and Mary Nichols, 81, were stopping to ask directions along Caliente Creek Road, when their car became stuck on a curb.

Nichols, got out and walked to the rear of the car, the CHP reported.

Terrazas then got out of the car to help Nichols, failing to set the parking brake. The car began to roll backwards, trapping Nichols under the rear tires.

Officer Darren Meadors of the CHP, said, “It's unclear whether the vehicle was in neutral or reverse."

Nichols was freed and taken to Kern Medical Center.

The CHP said she suffered major injuries to both femurs and hips.

Nichols is currently listed in critical condition.
