DELANO, Calif. -- A distribution train unlike any other in the world has opened up shop in Delano.ABC23’s North County reporter Crystal Figueroa got an exclusive look inside the Railex distribution company.Workers said you can almost think of it as a “frozen” train.
Workers said the near sub-freezing storage temperatures in their rail cars are what makes their distribution system so unique.Gary Pena, the company’s manager, said the cold-chain is never broken.Pena said that means that from the moment the produce is taken off the delivery trucks, it’s stored in 35 degree rooms.Pena said the loads are then moved through cold halls and finally packed into the refrigerated rail cars.Pena said no other company guarantees moving so many products from the west coast to the east coast in five days.Pena said they load 55 rail cars, which is the equivalent of 220 truck loads worth of product.Pena said the company plans to add another “frozen” train next month.
