EAST BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A local market is asking people to help the victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Mexico last week.
People at Mercado Latino in East Bakersfield are collecting clothing and money to be sent to the victims of the magnitude 7.6 quake that hit the city of Colima. Donation boxes have been set up at vendor stands throughout the market.
Mercado Latino officials say the money collected will be given directly to the victims via a state-licensed non-profit organization.
The Colima quake hit home for many in Bakersfield who have ties to the victims.
"We do have some customers and employees -- a lot of people are related to them," said Mercado Latino's Felipe Ojeda. "Fortunately, we know that everybody is fine, but houses, places, everything is gone."
Clothing donations for the earthquake victims also can be dropped off at the market on Edison Highway after 3 p.m. weekdays.
