WASCO, Calif. -- With the state budget looking to cut everywhere they can to close the deficit, school's across the nation are feeling the pinch.Administrators at Wasco High said it doesn't look good this summer, but it could have been a lot worse. They said they've had to cut two classes and increase class size to make up for lost funding.Under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent budget revisions, the K-12 education system stands to lose $5.5 billion more through June of next year.
Wasco High school principal Joe Elwood said they've been preparing for months for next school year. He said even though they won't cut teachers they will cut everywhere else, including field trips and possibly athletics. Those cuts will start in the fall, but this summer is already being scaled back.Sandra Fisher is the summer school principal. Fisher said this summer there won't be a geometry or SAT prep course. Fisher said the worst part is that students who don't do well next year might not have a second chance at the end of the year since summer school is in danger of not coming back either. Some California parents are urging lawmakers to raise taxes to prevent some of the cuts to education. Politicians said it would be next to impossible to get the number of republicans they need to agree to that.
