BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Dozens and dozens of bicycle riders hit the streets Thursday night to remember a fallen friend and fellow bike rider.Riders pedaled their way from the Liberty Bell in Downtown Bakersfield to just north of Bear Mountain Boulevard on South Union Avenue, where Alton Saceaux, 56, was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver.Saceaux was well known in the Bakersfield cyclist community, Thursday night was an opportunity for those who knew him to go on one final ride.
"He's always been one of those guys who's been very inspirational to all cyclists, asking how's it going, always interested in what your cycling accomplishments have been," said George Puentes, who knew Saceaux dating back to the 1980s."This signifies the missing rider, just like you would see in an Air Force salute or something like that, this represents, this represents our fallen comrade," said Arin Resnicke of Bike Bakersfield, who rode a two-person bicycle with a helmet resting on the rear seat and cycle shoes strapped into the pedals.Douglas Kaiser, 68, has been arrested for gross vehicular homicide while intoxicated, DUI causing death and hit and run causing death.
