Two children and their mother have died after the California Highway Patrol said the family’s father sped down Highway 43 and crashed into a truck coming in the opposite direction.

The CHP said at about 4 p.m. Sunday, an officer on patrol spotted the Lincoln Navigator going down Highway 43 at 83 mph.

The officer attempted to pull the SUV over, but Pedro Munoz, 27, the driver of the SUV, decided to keep driving.

Moments later, the officer saw Munoz swerve into the opposite lanes of traffic and hit a Ford F-250 that was pulling a trailer.

Two adults, two teenagers and eleven-year-old suffered injuries. They were all taken to local hospitals. The female driver was airlifted.

CHP said that Munoz's 7-year-old son was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV. He later died at the scene.

Munoz's wife, Lilliana Edith Ulloa-Gutierez, 24, and 5-year-old daughter were also killed in the crash.

Munoz was taken to Kern Medical Center where he is listed in fair condition.

Munoz was arrested on charges of felony DUI and three counts of vehicular manslaughter.

The family in the truck was said to be from Bakersfield.
