Local Group Continues To Help Those With Disabilities

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Mastering Abilities Riding Equines, or M.A.R.E, has grown steadily since 1990 and continues to provide therapeutic equine activities to children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges Organizers said they have has seen hundreds of success stories over the years.There are a variety of programs such as sport riding, equestrian vaulting and hippotherapy. All are designed to help people with conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, autism and learning disabilities.When a patient rides on a horse, therapist say the movement is similar to that of human movement of the pelvis while walking, which in turn helps some people with disabilities get a better chance in recovery.
They provide this therapy to 90 clients per week with only four part-time, three full-time staff members and many volunteers doing the work. M.A.R.E is always on the lookout for people who are interested in volunteering their time. If you are interested in helping, they can be reached at 589-1877.
