BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Cuts in the Bakersfield City School District could have a big impact on your child's education, in ways you might never have expected.
That's because cuts are most likely among the district's custodial staff, KERO reported. Officials have already announced that at least one custodian per school may be sacked.
Tom Reyes has worked at Curran Middle School for 11 years. He could be one of the 72 custodians laid off because of budget cuts.
"I don't know how you're going to maintain a school to the caliber it is now when you cut one custodian per school," he said.
The school district has said that one of the ways it may suffer the custodial deficit would be to have roving mobile cleaning units traveling from school to school. The units may even include parents, district communications manager Aaron Hunt said.
Curran Middle School principal Mike Skiba said he and his staff are brainstorming to come up with solutions to the possible cutbacks.
"We just today started looking at some different ways to do things and do the job we've been doing all along," Skiba said.
