BPD Releases DUI Checkpoint Numbers

1 Motorist Took Off, Lead Police On Foot Chase

POSTED: 11:38 am PDT July 20, 2009

On July 17, the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail conducted a DUI / Drivers License Checkpoint in the 2300 block of Mt. Vernon Ave. between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m.

As a result of this enforcement event, a total of 2205 vehicles passed through the checkpoint; 1518 of those vehicles were screened by officers; 92 vehicles were impounded; 69 motorists were issued citations for unlicensed driver; 23 motorists were issued citations for driving on a suspended/revoked drivers license; 3 motorists were issued citations for miscellaneous vehicle code violations; and 10 motorists were asked to perform field sobriety tests to determine their level of intoxication.

Of the 10 motorists asked to perform these tests, Francisco Delacruz, 40, was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level above .01 percent while on DUI probation. Delacruz abandoned his running vehicle in the roadway and led officers on a short foot chase through Heritage Park before he was taken into custody.

Delacruz’s California driving privileges were found to be suspended or revoked due to a prior DUI conviction.

Two motorists were arrested for outstanding warrants.
