Ag Official Warns Of Possible Scam

Chicken Owners Targeted

UPDATED: 6:33 a.m. PST March 5, 2003

Concerns about the spread of exotic Newcastle disease has state agriculture officials warning of a possible scam.

The scam promises that the birds will be tested for the disease and the farm disinfected for a price. But Agricultural Commissioner Ted Davis says all inspections, testing and disinfecting are done free of charge.

"The California Department of Food and Agriculture and the USDA will actually come onto the premises and do those inspections for free," Davis said. "And if they do find Newcastle disease, they will reimburse you for any lost birds that you have. If you do have disease symptoms in your flock, there is an 800 number which you can call and the proper authorities will come out and test those birds for free."

If your poultry show signs of exotic Newcastle disease, you can call for testing at (800) 491-1899.

Davis warns residents to ask for credentials if someone claims to be from the ag department -- they are all required to carry identification.

Exotic Newcastle disease has not been found in any Kern County birds.
