BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- When Theresa Knox was diagnosed as being in the early stages of diabetes, she knew she needed to make some lifestyle changes. In just a few months, she lost 35 pounds. It wasn't an easy task but with the help of following the wellness program provided by her employer, Vintage Production, she is now walking her way to better health."The best thing about it is that we have more productivity and less down time, less sick time. It makes your day go shorter and it helps relieve stress because our job is very stressful," said Knox.
Sean Kenny, wellness coordinator for Mercy and Memorial Hospitals, meets with several local companies monthly to design, implement and evaluate their wellness programs.Even though such programs are not a new concept, Kenny said they are gaining in popularity because of the economy."Companies are looking for ways to save money, and this can really keep the cost down, especially on health insurance. And not to mention, it improves morale, reduces absentee rates and reduces stress so employees are more productive," said Kenny.Another company going the extra mile for their employees is Aera Energy. They recently opened a state-of-the-art employee fitness facility. Ron Jones, who is a corporate wellness coach, at the facility said more companies need to hop on board if we want to end the obesity epidemic plaguing the nation."Prevention is the key. We just can't afford people to be so sick and diseased anymore as a country and I think corporate America will solve the health care crisis out of necessity because they have to for survival," said Jones.Companies with such programs could soon get a break from the government. There is a proposed health care bill in the Senate that would give employers tax credits if they implement a comprehensive wellness program.
