Vietnam Wall Memorial Passes Through Bakersfield

POSTED: 1:09 pm PDT September 2, 2009
UPDATED: 2:22 pm PDT September 2, 2009

Over 100 Harleys escorted a Vietnam War memorial to the Los Angeles area for Labor Day celebrations Wednesday morning.

Each year, millions of people visit the Vietnam Veterans memorial wall in Washington, D.C., to honor those who fought for our country, and those who lost their lives in the battle.

But for those who can't make it to the nation's capital to pay their respects, the moving wall comes to them.

Jim Biby, marketing director for the Dignity Wall, said, “It's just a part of history. A lot of people can't make it to Washington, D.C. This is a chance to bring a part of history to them."

Wednesday morning the wall was all packed up, and its driver was ready to hit the road for its next scheduled stop in Westlake Village to celebrate Labor Day.

The Harley Davidson riders of Bakersfield were asked specifically to lead the escort and they did so in style -- with more than a hundred riders present, and the fire department flying the American flag.

Ben Patten, of Bakersfield Harley Davidson, said, “The fire guys yesterday, he said 'it's kind of late notice', and I said, 'yes sir it is.' and he said, 'what's the event?' and I told him, and his response to me was 'what time do you want it flying?' That's the kind of support we get from this community."

The riders say they were honored to participate, both for the veterans of that war, and for the soldiers fighting today.

Scott O'Neal, one of the riders, said, “We're able to come out and speak and be here because of what they sacrificed and all, so we can do this. It’s the most important thing, the fact that we can. No matter how you feel about the war, it's the troops you have to be behind."
