Pedestrian Killed In Hit-And-Run
Two Men Hit Crossing Union Ave. In Separate Accidents This Weekend
POSTED: 7:44 p.m. PST March 31, 2003
SOUTH BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A section of Union Avenue near California Avenue has been the scene of five fatal accidents involving pedestrians in six years. The most recent was a hit-and-run accident Sunday night near Union and East 10th Street.
Another pedestrian was hit in the same area on Saturday.
There's a great deal of foot traffic along Union Avenue and crossing the six-lane road can be dangerous.
Police said it's a deadly game of chance that many people take when attempting to cross in places that don't have recognized crosswalks.
Police said Gary White, 40, was trying to cross at East 10th Street Sunday around 8:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car allegedly driven by Michael Charles Brown Jr.
Investigators said it's impossible to determine how fast Brown was going at the time of the accident because White was not thrown by the impact. Instead, White was thrown through the windshield and into the car, injuring Brown's brother, who was a passenger.
Bakersfield Police Detective Mary Degeare said Brown drove a few hundred feet to the Wienerschnitzel parking lot, where he and his brother allegedly pulled White out of the windshield and left him.
White was found by a person Degeare did not identify, who called police. White died shortly after arriving at Kern Medical Center.
Police said brown took his brother to a home in east Bakersfield where family members called for an ambulance because his brother had injuries to his face and eyes.
Police said Brown was later arrested after he tried to report that he was the victim of a carjacking.
Police said Brown would be arraigned on Wednesday for felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, DUI and driving with a suspended license.
White was the second pedestrian hit in that area of Union this weekend. On Saturday night, an unidentified man was also hit trying to cross Union near Eighth Street.
Police said he suffered massive head injuries and still hasn't regained consciousness.
