Man's Best Friend Comforts Mourning Family

Man's Body Found In Glennville Mountains

An Oildale family mourned Monday night as the search for a loved one came to a tragic end.

But even with the devastating loss, this family is finding some comfort in the courage of a faithful dog named Rudy.

When John Willingham, 49, disappeared on March 25, family members knew that if Rudy could be found, John would be too.

Unfortunately, Willingham was found too late. His body was located in the mountains outside of Glennville with his devoted friend standing guard.

"He is a hero - he's a mighty dog! The rescue team was surprised to find a dog that was so loyal," sister-in-law Carol Morovich said. "They said he was an extraordinary dog - and most dogs wouldn't have done what he did, staying with him as long as he did,"

Officers were amazed that the dog was still with Willingham, who had been missing for more than 10 days.

Search and Rescue Commander Rocky Lacertoso said without the dog being spotted in Glennville, the search for Willingham was nearly impossible.

"If the dog hadn't left the gentlemen and come down to civilization - we never would have known where to start and of course the final factor - the volunteers - getting up there and finding the gentleman," Lacertoso said.

Willingham's son-in-law Jeff Davis said Rudy's devotion showed that pitbulls aren't always so bad.

"These dogs are good - based on their upbringing - and their owners - and if their owners give them love and care - they're good dogs," Davis said.

The Willingham family told 23 News they are grateful to the search and rescue volunteers who worked so hard over the weekend to find Willingham.

"We are just real pleased too that the dog survived because they have something to hold on to - some memory of John and it's a comfort that somebody survived after 12 days," Lacertoso said.
