Officer Shoots Man That Accelerated Toward Him

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- It started as a traffic stop but ended with the driver shot once in the neck after he reversed into a Bakersfield Police motorcycle officer.According to the Bakersfield Police, Officer Nathan Anderberg pulled over the Chevy Tahoe for a routine traffic stop, Wednesday afternoon.When Anderberg got off the bike and began to approach the vehicle, Marcos Barraza, 27, accelerated in reverse toward him, police told ABC23.
Anderberg ran to the sidewalk while telling Barraza to stop. When he didn't, Anderberg fired one shot that hit Barraza in the neck.Barraza immediately told Anderberg that he had been shot and surrendered.Anderberg, a nine year veteran of the department, was not injured.While police waited for emergency crews, Carla Rodriguez, 26, the girlfriend of Barraza, rushed into the crime scene, police said.After failing to follow police orders, a Taser was used on her by Officer Sean Underhill.Minutes later a 17-year-old girl also believed to be related to Barraza, was also arrested for interfering and resisting arrest.The investigation is continuing.Barraza was released from the Hospital Thursday afternoon and has since been booked into the Kern County Jail.Barraza was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest, auto theft, possession of stolen property and driving on a suspended license.The Chevy Tahoe involved was stolen.Officer Anderberg will be placed on routine administrative leave during the investigation and subsequent review board process.
