Missing Man Found Dead In Creek

POSTED: 12:10 pm PST November 3, 2009
UPDATED: 8:41 am PST November 4, 2009

The body found in a creek Tuesday morning was that of a man who has been missing for more than a week.

Coroner's officials identified the victim as Jukka Hellsten, 42, of Frazier Park, who was last seen October 24.

Two teenagers were walking along Cuddy Creek near Arroyo and Monterey Trails before 10 a.m. Tuesday when they made the gruesome discovery.

They walked to the Sheriff's substation, which was less than 100 yards away on Monterey Trail, according to Sgt. Craig Rennie.

"He was really shaken up, and very disturbed," said Brian Vergini, referring to his son, who made the discovery.

Deputies noticed signs of trauma on the body when they arrived on-scene. The injuries could have either resulted from a fall into the creek or from a homicide, Rennie said.

Investigators told ABC23 that the body appeared to have been in the creek for one or two days.

For days, several residents had posted fliers all over seeking information on Hellsten's whereabouts.

"His picture was all over town," said Terri Lacasse, who works near the scene of where Hellsten's body was located.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, which could yield more clues as to whether Hellsten died of an accidental cause or was killed.
