BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- City fire officials confirmed at 10 a.m. that an infant was found not breathing at home on the 4000 block of Kilkenny Court in south Bakersfield.Officials originally said that the mother told police that she was bathing the infant and left for an undetermined amount of time. The infant was found by a 4-year-old sibling in the bathtub after the mother left the child unattended for a brief period of time.New information has been discovered by police that when officers arrived, they said they were handed an infant that was unresponsive and CPR was performed until medical aid arrived.
Life-saving efforts were continued and the child was transported to the Heart Hospital and then to the Children's Hospital Central California in Madera, Calif.Police discovered that the mother, Anita Lebelle, 36, had been giving her 4-year-old child a bath while the infant slept in the bed.Police said Lebelle then went to the store with her two other children, ages 1 and 2.While she was gone, police said the 4-year-old that was originally taking a bath decided to give the infant a bath while unsupervised. The investigation is continuing.Possible criminal charges are being sought.
