Designate Non-Drinking Driver Before You Start Celebrating

BAKERSFIELD, CAlif. -- It is time to ring in the New Year!The Winter Holiday DUI crackdown on drinking drivers over the two- week Maximum Enforcement period continues.So far the campaign has resulted in a large number of DUI arrests in our area.
The Kern “AVOID” DUI Campaign from 12 a.m. Dec. 18, through 12 a.m. Dec. 30, with participation by all county law enforcement agencies is reporting provisional arrests of at least 151 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.Tragically we have had several fatal accidents in our area as well as several that resulted in injuries to the driver or occupants in the vehicles.(**NOTE: These numbers are only provisional with many agencies yet to report**) Data collection will continue through January 3, 2010.Law enforcement officials will be conducting more anti DUI efforts in communities throughout the county this weekend, so if you are gathering with family or friends – Don’t drink and drive plan for a Designated Driver.All CHP Areas throughout the state will have increased staffing during the New Years weekend beginning 6 p.m. Thursday and ending midnight Jan. 3, 2010.All Police and Sheriff patrols will be alert to unsafe driving and arresting DUI suspects during the holiday period.DUI Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols or both will be occurring in areas including Arvin, Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Shafter, Stallion Spring, Taft, Tehachapi and others.“AVOID” programs, are named for police agencies in each county, who also concentrate their enforcement efforts do curb DUI during Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends, as well as the 18-Day August/Labor Day periods. DUI statistics show that the year- end holiday period is among the deadliest season of the year, and law enforcement agencies throughout the county will be making every effort to arrest drunk drivers before another life is lost.Your local police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage all motorists to help make your community safer by reporting Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.Need A Designated Driver For New Year's? - Call 661-325-5041
