Meadows Field Shut Down

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- No hazardous material was found in the baggage of a Meadows Field passenger several hours after that checked bag set off an alarm, leading to the closure of the Bakersfield airport Tuesday morning, according to the Kern County Sheriff's department.Earlier Tuesday the Sheriff's department reported initial testing of the bag revealed an explosive substance, possibly TNT.The bag was taken to the Lerdo Pre-Trial facility for further examination, which revealed no explosive substance.
Watch Video The incident began about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when the bag set off an alarm while passing through a screening machine, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The bag belonged to Francisco Ramirez, 31, of Milwaukee. TSA found five bottles with an unknown substance inside the bag and an unknown substance that preliminarily tested positive for an explosive material. The William Thomas Terminal was evacuated and several flight departures and arrivals were delayed.Two TSA employees opened a bottle and complained of chemical odor and nausea. They were treated at a local hospital and released.Ramirez said he was traveling back to Milwaukee and the bottles contained honey. The further testing by authorities confirmed honey was in the bottles.Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Ramirez is a legal permanent resident of the United States. Ramirez was not charged with any criminal violation and he is no longer being detained.The airporrt was reopened at about 1:30 p.m.
