CHP Officer Hit By Out-Of-Control Tractor-Trailer

UPDATED: 11:36 am PST January 25, 2010

A California Highway Patrol officer was taken to a hospital after he was hit by an out-of-control tractor-trailer.

On Saturday around 5:45 a.m., CHP Officer R. Main was responding to a report of two disabled vehicles in the center divider of State Route 58 east of Tehachapi Boulevard.

Main said he arrived to find a 2003 Ford F-350 pickup and a 2004 BMW X3 SUV.

The CHP said the F-350 was stopped in the center divider facing west, and the BMW was stopped in the center divider next to the F-350, facing east.

The CHP patrol vehicle was stopped in the center divider next to the F-350, the CHP said.

The driver of the F-350 was identified as Zachary Page, 21, of Tehachapi.

The CHP said Page was seated in the BMW as he waited for assistance for the disabled pickup.

The additional occupants of the BMW were identified as Estella Guerrero, 48, Nadine Guerrero, 20, and Ashton Page 1, all of Tehachapi.

The CHP said Francisco Pulido, 44, of Bakersfield, was driving a 1995 Freightliner 3 axle truck/tractor pulling a flatbed trailer eastbound on State Route 58 in the No. 2 lane over Tehachapi Boulevard at an approximate speed of 50 mph.

Pulido observed the emergency lights of the CHP patrol vehicle ahead and began to slow down, the CHP reported.

Pulido felt the trailer start to slip on the icy road and attempted to slow down, the CHP reported. The tractor/trailer combination began to slide across the roadway as Pulido lost control of his vehicle.

The tractor trailer jackknifed and collided with the F-350 pickup and the BMW SUV. The jackknifed tractor trailer then collided with the CHP patrol vehicle, pushing it into the westbound lanes of State Route 58.

The occupants of the BMW suffered minor injuries but declined to be transported to the hospital.

Main was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, but then released.
