TEHACHAPI, Calif. -- Special elections typically see lower turnout numbers, but Tuesday in Tehachapi, most seem to believe the day's weather is to blame.Snow and ice have made it difficult for voters. This morning, one polling location wasn’t able to open on time because the inspector was stuck in Bakersfield due to the closure of Highway 58.
But for those feeling strongly about the recall election weren’t about to let a little snow stop them from getting their vote counted.Shawn Pugh, who voted "no" on the recall, said, “I came out to vote because I believe this was a political witch hunt. I wanted to come out and support the candidates that are still in office.”Julia Barraclough disagrees, she voted "yes" on the recall.“I’m concerned about what happened with the junior high principal last year. I was just really disappointed in the board members and the decision they made,” said Barraclough. And while some blame the bad weather for the slow turnout, Irene Murphy believes some people just don't care about special elections despite the recall being a hot topic in the community for months."Not enough people care about voting on every issue. They want to vote for the big issues of the president and Congress, but they don't realize this little issues are pretty important," said Murphy. If any of the three board members are recalled, the newly elected candidates will be certified by the county on March 19 and officially take their seat on the school board at the following school board meeting on March 23.Officials at the polling locations said voter turnout has been picking up and they hope it will even more as people get off of work. The polls are open until 8 p.m.
