Officer Shoots Fleeing Suspect

Stolen Car Suspect Runs From Police, Officer Shoots

POSTED: 4:49 am PST March 10, 2010
UPDATED: 8:54 am PST March 10, 2010

What started out as a traffic accident in East Bakersfield ended with a foot chase through two homes and a suspect shot by deputies, with two to four other suspects still on the loose.

Kern Co. Sheriff's deputies got a call to a traffic accident at Mt. Vernon and Oregon Drive around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, with reports of shots fired at that location.

A small silver Nissan car and a white pickup truck had crashed, with witnesses claiming someone in the Nissan fired a gun into the air. But the people in that Nissan ran before deputies arrived on scene.

A quick check showed the Nissan was reported stolen, and deputies soon found a possible suspect in the 2300 block of Niles Street.

A foot chase ensued, with the suspect jumping fences and running through several yards. At one point during the chase, deputies said the suspect fired a shot at them.

Deputies said during the chase that suspect also broke into two occupied homes. In the first home, they say he stole a phone before running again, but the people in the second home chased him out.

Deputies finally confronted the suspect in the back yard of that second home on Kentucky Street and officials are confirming a deputy then shot him. The officer who fired is a six year veteran of the department, and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

The suspect, 18-year-old Adolfo Rivera, was taken to Kern Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. No one else was injured.

There are still two to four suspects outstanding at this time. They're described as hispanic males, 18 to 25 years old, with thin builds.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (661) 861-3110.

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) reminds motorists that just as a collision can cause hidden structural damage to a vehicle, it can also cause invisible structural damage to car seats -- making them less able to protect your child in the event of another crash. More
