School Bus Brakes Hard, 11 Kids Hospitalized

11 Of 38 Children Received Minor Injuries

UPDATED: 3:19 pm PST March 10, 2010

A bus was cut off and had to slam on its brakes Wednesday afternoon, and 11 of the 38 students on board were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

On Wednesday around 9:30 a.m., Mickie Mendez, 68, who was driving a 2005 GMC Sierra, and Cecelia Luque, 59, who was driving a 1988 Thomas school bus, were both stopped at a red light at the intersection of eastbound Truxtun Avenue at N Street, the California Highway Patrol said.

Luque was driving the school bus en route to the Rabobank Convention Center for an event called the Young People's Concert and was stopped in the eastbound right-hand turn lane, Officer Robert Rodriguez said.

Mendez was stopped in the No. 3 lane of eastbound Truxtun Avenue on the left side of the school bus.

When the light turned green, both drivers accelerated eastbound.

Mendez attempted to make a right turn directly ahead of Luque.

Luque saw the pickup cross in front of her and slammed on her brakes.

Although the vehicles did not collide with one another, children inside the bus were thrust forward and struck the backs of the seats.

Eleven out of the 38 children received minor injuries, complained of pain and were taken ambulance to local hospitals.

Rodriguez said that Luque stayed and she gave a statement as to what happened.

No citations have been issued at this time.

This matter remains under investigation.
