DELANO, Calif. -- Another day, another round of teacher cuts, this time in Delano.ABC23's North County reporter Crystal Figueroa was at the high school district Thursday to find out who will have to lose their job in order for the district to survive.Superintendent Rosalina Rivera said she and her department are devastated by the inevitable cuts.
The high school district will cut 14 teaching positions. Rivera said the jobs will not come back because they failed to complete a credential program or failed to meet performance standards.Among the lost positions are four math, four English and four science teachers.Rivera said the district is trying to survive their budget cuts by applying for grants and dipping into their reserves.Rivera said teachers are getting creative to help stop the bleeding of funds. One teacher offered to be the yearbook’s administrator without pay. While those actions are considerate, Rivera said the reality is that teachers will have increased class sizes period But she guaranteed the community that every student will receive a quality education despite the budget.
