Buttonwillow Man Arrested After Vehicle Pursuit

BUTTONWILLOW, Calif. -- Vehicle pursuit ends with a man arrested after police tried pulling him over.Around 12:30 a.m. Friday, deputies said they spotted a vehicle in a rural area of Buttonwillow, where recent thefts had occurred.Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle to determine if the sole occupant was involved in criminal activity. The vehicle fled when they attempted to stop it, deputies said.
The vehicle led them on a pursuit on rural roads and through farm fields, deputies said.The Kern County Sheriff's Office helicopter and members of the California Highway Patrol assisted the deputies in the pursuit.At times, the vehicle reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour, deputies said.Deputies said that twice during the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle swerved his vehicle towards a marked patrol car. The pursuit lasted approximately one hour and spanned approximately 25 miles.Eventually the vehicle came to a stop in the town of Buttonwillow and the driver fled on foot. He was located a short distance later and was taken into custody without incident. A rifle was located inside the vehicle.The driver was identified as: 23 year old Buttonwillow resident Jeffrey Matthew Watkins. Watkins was arrested and booked into the Kern County Central Receiving Facility for: Felony evading, driving under the influence of alcohol, resisting arrest, assault on a peace officer and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.No one was injured during this incident.
